    A Teaching Salon with the theme “College students’ Practical Innovative Education” held at School of Food and Biological Engineering

    On the afternoon of October 18th, School of Food and Biological Engineering held a teaching salon with the theme of “College Students’ Practical Innovative Education” at Room 403. Professor Zhou Cunshan, Vice Dean of School of Food and Biological Engineering, hosted this salon. The persons attending this salon includes backbone teachers, young teachers, and some teachers from other department. In the salon, Doctor Xinyi Zan, deputy director of the Department of Biotechnology, gave a report entitled “College Students’ Practical Innovative Education & National College Student Life Science Competition”.



    Prof. Zhou first emphasized the purpose and significance of this teaching salon. The practical innovation education of college students is intended to strengthen the cultivation of students' autonomy, exploration, practice and collaboration, and cultivate students' sense of innovation, teamwork awareness and practical innovation ability. Secondly, it advises teachers and students to don't seek quick success and instant benefits and focus on being exercised and cultivated in the process of practice. In addition, participating in discipline competitions is an effective way to comprehensively exercise and enhance students' scientific research interest, innovative spirit, practical skills, academic vision and scientific research thinking. Prof. Zhou encouraged young teachers to take advantage of the advantages of disciplines and scientific research teams to supervise undergraduates to participate in various discipline competitions, stimulate students' enthusiasm for competition, and improve the quality of undergraduate talent training.

    In March 2022, Xinyi Zan guided students to participate in the 2022 China Undergraduates Life Science Competition, and won first prize in the finals in July 2022. In the report, Dr. Zan mainly introduced competition requirements and rules, application form writing, how to prepare for the final, and exhibition of some winning works. At last, Dr. Zan shared his personal experience in guiding students to prepare for the competition in detail.

    During the free talk, some teachers discussed the practical problems encountered by students in practical education with Dr. Zan. Many teachers think that the content of the salon is wonderful and the atmosphere is lively and.

    The nearly two-hour seminar was highly appreciated by the participating teachers, and everyone agreed that the salon activity benefited a lot. Teachers also expressed their desire to improve the quality of practical and innovative education based on the idea of student-oriented and cultivate people with virtue, and contribute to the comprehensive development of teaching in the School of Food and Bioengineering.
