At 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 24, 2021, the young faculty in their period of teaching assistantship of the School of Medicine attended the demonstration class of “Narrative Medicine” given by Hou Li of the Geriatric Department of the Affiliated Hospital of Jiangsu University.
To begin with, Hou summed up the contents of the previous lecture and shared the relevant survey data students had collected and submitted. Then he recommended some movies and books related to medicine for the students to read and cultivate their humanistic feelings. After that, he presented several clinical cases of narrative medicine, which showed the humanistic care of doctors for patients vividly. On the basis of these examples, he put forward the concept of “Three Focuses” in narrative medicine, namely the connectivity between men; the empathy of human beings, and the human emotions, especially the negative affection. In addition, teamwork was organized to discuss and analyze the cases, in which students acted as “sharers” and “observers” respectively, so that they might fully activate their thinking and immerse themselves into the classroom atmosphere, and constantly improve their communicative and organizational abilities. Hou strove to give a lively lecture through PPT and related videos to mobilize the classroom learning atmosphere and diversify the lecture contents.
This demonstration class touched upon teaching preparation, methodology and interaction, and the students-oriented classroom instruction much needed by the young faculty of the School so that it would effectively promote their comprehensive teaching level and ability.
