On the afternoon of April 9, the School of Civil Engineering and Mechanics held the “Teaching Salon of Face to Face Talks on Course Ideological and Political Education” in the Third Lecture Hall of the Meeting Center. The purpose of this event is to further explore the teaching law of “course ideological and political education”, reinforce the practice of course ideological and political education from multiple perspectives, to combine the knowledge inculcation, capability cultivation and value orientation in an organic manner, and to construct the road for the practice of course ideological and political education in line with the discipline features of the School. Four panelists were invited to give instructions to the teaching salon, namely Hohai University Teaching Affairs Office Director Shen Yang, Jiangsu University Teaching Affairs Office Deputy Director Xue Hongli, Jiangsu University School of Foreign Languages Deputy Dean Wu Peng, and Jiangsu University School of Marxism Deputy Dean Jiang Junming. The Salon was presided over by School of Civil Engineering and Mechanics Deputy Dean Lu Chunhua. Present at the Salon were School of Civil Engineering and Mechanics Party Committee Secretary Zhu Yan, Deputy Dean Han Yu and more than 70 faculty members of the School.
The Salon comprises Course Ideological and Political Education Demonstration Class, Face to Face Talks on Course Ideological and Political Education, and Lectures by Specialists. At the demonstration stage, seven faculty members from three majors of the School gave demonstration classes, namely Introduction to Civil Engineering, Mechanics of Materials, Introduction to Engineering Management, Bridge Engineering, Civil Engineering Construction and Organization, Acquaintanceship Practice, and Engineering Construction and Management. These classes cover all types of courses in the curriculum. Each teacher assumed a serious attitude towards their classes, integrating the ideological and political elements into their courses that contained a full variety of contents.
The four panelists then had a “face-to-face” dialogue with the faculty present at the Salon. Director Shen Yang gave full affirmation to the School faculty’s practical exploration of integrating the ideological and political contents into the major courses naturally and organically. He stressed the need to innovate methods and adopt various forms of classroom instruction, so that the ideological and political elements would really play the instructive role of “exerting a subtle influence on the students” in these major courses. Deputy Dean Jiang Junming said that the ideological and political course and the course ideological and political education are mutually reinforcing so that we should conduct the course ideological and political education through an organic combination of such elements as technology, great personage, and gist. Deputy Dean Wu Peng suggested that we should further enrich the contents of course ideological and political education like professional integrity, professional ethics, professional ideal, and the rule of law, and meanwhile enhance the awareness of problems. Deputy Director Xue Hongli suggested that on the basis of an agreed list of ideological and political points, all majors should make full use of the immersion instruction to further enrich teaching strategies. Then, the participants exchanged ideas with the panelists on difficult problems they had encountered in teaching.
Finally, Director Shen Yang delivered a lecture entitled “Construction and practice of course ideological and political educational system of the civil engineering courses in Hohai University". The lecture comprises four parts, namely Internal Driving Force, the Way of Wholeness, the Technique of Locality, and Concomitant Progress of Guidance and Application. Based on the experience of Hohai University, Shen expounded the importance of teaching reform with examples and achievements. He pointed out that efforts should be made to integrate the content, connotation and methods, and to combine the educational role of both the faculty and the curriculum. Director Shen Yang went on to detail the 22 parameters of the requirements for the ideological and political education of civil engineering courses in Hohai University, introducing the methods of organically combining these contents with the requirements of curriculum syllabus. His lecture offered enlightening ideas for the faculty of Jiangsu University to conduct the course ideological and political education in practice.
This “face to face” teaching salon aims to elevate the awareness and ability of the School faculty to carry out course ideological and political education, and to draw a big picture of whole staff, whole process and all-round education. The School will take this great opportunity to explore the construction of the case base of course ideological and political education and its follow-up work involved.
