On the morning of April 14, the University-level demonstration class of the 20-21-2 semester of the School of Civil Engineering and Mechanics was undertaken in Room 3205 of the Jingjiang Building, with a view to bringing into full play the leading role of excellent faculty members and constantly upgrading the teaching level and quality of the faculty. The demonstration lecture entitled Structural Mechanics was given by Xu Haixia of the Department of Civil Engineering. It is given at the schedule time for the class. Young faculty of the School in the period of their teaching assistantship attended the class.
To begin with, Xu guided the students to brush up the key points in Chapter 3 by explaining the homework exercises in detail. Then, he reiterated the important concepts of moving load and influence line through three concerns and the basic assumption about influence line. In order to let students get a deeper impression of the moving process of load, Xu asked two students to make a live demonstration on it. Through a rod and the moving load, they can feel the changes at both ends of the rod, and then arises the concept of influence line equation. The classroom quiz that followed further deepened the students’ understanding of the knowledge of this lecture.
At 2:30 that day, a teaching assessment was held on the Demonstration Class in the Conference Room (908) by the School. The meeting was presided over by Deputy Dean Lu Chunhua, where the demonstration class lecturer and young faculty of the School exchanged ideas on classroom instruction. The participants of the meeting agreed that Xu’s lecture was well designed and highlighted the key points. He assumed a serious attitude toward the lecture and attached great importance to the learning capability of the students. He produced a very good effect of teaching. Dean Lu noted that teaching is a process of accumulation so that young faculty should learn from others by attending the demonstration classes and work out the best teaching plan of their own.
