On June 17, the Center for Faculty Development held the 2nd “Afternoon Tea” Teaching Workshop. The first workshop had received warm welcome from the faculty. The second workshop was entitled “Discover the innovative faculty by means of brain science”. At the workshop, Associate Professor Dr. Hu Guilan at the Experimental Research Center for Brain and Behavioral Sciences, Jiangsu University, shared with the participants her study of electroencephalogram (EEG) and electroencephaloquadrantogram (EEQG) assessment for many years.

Dr. Hu Guilan introduced, from the perspective of discovering and cultivating innovative talents, the principles for EEG and EEQG assessment, the difference between EEG and EEQG assessment and other testing approaches including psychological assessment, and the content and examples of EEG and EEQG assessment. Through the comparison and analysis of specific examples, she expounded the basic parameters for innovative faculty and innovative talents. Then based on the theoretical exploration, she made the following suggestions: we should encourage both the faculty and college students to explore the unknown world more; to conduct multidisciplinary exchanges and discussions; to excavate their potential for innovative integration; to awaken their innovative awareness. Faculty members at the workshop are from different schools and colleges, including the School of Mathematical Science, the School of Electrical and Information Engineering, the School of Food Science, the School of Medicine, and the School of Law etc. The conferees had had a heated brainstorming on the workshop theme from different disciplines, fields and perspectives, which created new inspiration and possibilities for cooperation. During the discussions, Professor Sun Jing of the School of Pharmacy cited examples from his own teaching experience and made the proposition that the faculty should evaluate their students in an all-round way and from multiple perspectives; Yu Xiaoqi of the School of Law shared her experience of integrating the course political and ideological education into her classroom instruction of the History of China’s Higher Education, which brought a spiritual baptism to the faculty members at the workshop. This is really a feast of knowledge, even a feast of wisdom, where each voiced his or her opinion on the college classroom instruction in the future.

The “Afternoon Tea” Teaching Workshop offers a new platform for the faculty development and a place for the light-hearted exchanges between faculty members. It has been favorably received by the faculty. The Center for Faculty Development pledges to serve the faculty heart and soul, to cater to their needs, and construct the “Afternoon Tea” platform into an intellectual and spiritual homeland for the faculty.
