On 27th November, the School of Teacher Education conducted an open class observation activity of Fundamentals of Secondary Education in 615 Sanjiang Building. The target of the class was the second-year undergraduate students majoring Civics and Politics (Teacher Education). The lecture was given by Prof Wang Baoxi, the winner of the "Top Ten Most Popular Teachers" of Jiangsu University in 2023. Zheng Lifang, Director of the Department of Education, and the young teachers in the assistant teaching training period of the School attended this open class.
The lesson had two parts. In the first stage, students first presented and discussed the learning tasks assigned in the previous lesson. Then, the teacher commented and summarised the students' presentations. This stage of the teaching activities effectively achieved the consistency of teaching, learning and assessment. In the second stage, Professor Wang guided students to discuss what a curriculum is by playing relevant videos, and then explained in depth the theoretical schools of thought and three different definitions of curriculum. The teaching content of the course was in-depth and focused. The classroom atmosphere was relaxed and active, and the teaching effect was good.
In this open class, Professor Wang showed young teachers the teaching strategy and skills of "student-centred and teacher-led", giving full play to the role of "Top Ten Teachers" in demonstrating, driving and leading. After the observation, the teachers and Professor Wang had an in-depth discussion and exchange on Civics teaching, teaching design and other related teaching issues. The young teachers agreed that the class fully embodied Professor Wang's ability to manage the classr. Professor Wang's teaching was rich in content, interactive and inspiring, and the interaction between teachers and students was flexible and varied.
The success of this open class provided young teachers with the opportunity to learn and exchange teaching experience, which positively impacted the young teachers’ teaching ability and also will help improve the quality of undergraduate teaching to some extent.
